Volunteering

Membership

WDRR is the perfect opportunity to acquire training and get involved in the wildlife conservation mission. Volunteering with WDRR will give you a hand-on experience in disasters working with wildlife and make a difference to local communities.

We provide training for wildlife handling and disaster management and let you make an impact on little lives. If this sounds like you, click the link below and get started with Wildlife Disaster Rescue and Recovery. We can help you make a valuable difference to your community and local wildlife, joining us as a member will allow you to participate in all activities, training and other opportunities made available for our volunteers. To hold a WDRR Rehabilitation Permit, you must be a financial member of the organisation.

WDRR offer single memberships for $50 per financial year and $85 for family memberships (beginning 01st July through until 30th June the following year). Your membership fee goes towards PPE and safety equipment for volunteers, admin costs associated with running the organisation and in your first year, a long-sleeved shirt and safety vest are provided (any further uniform items are at the volunteers expense).

*All volunteers must be over the age of 18.

**New memberships beginning in March will carry through until the following year (maximum of 15 months).

Becoming a Wildlife Rescuer or Rehabilitator

Wildlife Rehabilitation

WDRR believe in high standards and welfare for wildlife being rescued or rehabilitated. To ensure all volunteers follow best practices, WDRR provide internal training free for members and encourage our members to join other groups who provide high standard training. This allows for continued learning and providing better care for wildlife in rehabilitation.

To become a wildlife rehabilitator, you would need to be a current active or financial member of the group, housing and rescue equipment and have proven participation in relevant training for the species intending to be cared for. All rehabilitators are required to follow requirements under the Code of Practice for the Care of Sick, Injured or Orphaned Animals under the Qld Nature Conservation Act 1992

Qld Code of Practice for the care of Sick, Injured and Orphaned Animals

Qld Nature Conservation Act 1992

Australian Environmental Protection and Biosecurity Conservation Act 1999

WDRR require carers to keep accurate and complete records for animals in care. These are required to be sent into our admin team by all carers every 6 months. These will be collated to assist in grant applications and provide evidence to required parties for better protection and advocacy for wildlife.

Wildlife Disaster Rescue and Recovery Carer forms can be found by using the following link and completing the form with uploaded photos of equipment to be used for wildlife in care. This ensures species are being provided correct facilities and WDRR standards can be facilitated.

Carer permits are issued with an expiry date of 30th June each year.

WDRR Rehabilitation Permit Application

Wildlife Rescue

Joining WDRR as a rescuer will allow for continued growth and coverage to provide quick responses for wildlife needing assistance. This could involve conducting the rescue of an uncontained animal, collecting a contained animal, taking rescued wildlife to vets or collecting wildlife from vets and taking to carers.

The rescue network WDRR are building works throughout the Darling Downs region and collaborates with surrounding carers and groups to provide the quickest response and best trained volunteer to provide the rescue.

Rescues are required to have forms completed and these will be in a JotForm format. All volunteers will have access to the forms and need to be completed on same day as the rescue.

To be a rescuer with WDRR, you need to be an active and/or financial member, attend valid training and have equipment relevant to the species being rescued. Once you have your equipment sorted, reach out to a committee member to discuss being added to rescue lists.

Uninjured Native animal removal or relocation

If you require the relocation of wildlife from your property, we are not permitted to remove or relocate native wildlife. Local operators will be required that hold the relevant mitigation permits issued by the relevant authorities. These can be found online by doing a Google search for 'Wildlife Relocations'.
