Nicky Wright - Animal Behaviour Consultant

WDRR work with SDRC during and after disasters to provide the environmental outcomes. We are a member of the Local Disaster Coordination Centre and Environmental Recovery Group.

This allows us to be a conduit to the Council about issues and impacts and work with them to find outcomes to provide resources to assist in rehabilitation. This conduit allows us to identify issues Council can manage and forward through to relevant departments –

Example in 2023 fires in Wallangarra, we were able to take back to the Sub-Committee that the communities in these areas were having wild dog problems. Council’s pest management team was able to become more active in that impacted community to resolve the issue.

Nicky is a talented Conservation Detection Dog Handler and a part of the WDRR team.

She has her business, Animal Behaviour Consultant, where she does handling training etc, but she volunteers with us to conduct searches and rescues when there is a disaster with her dogs. We will have teams trained who work alongside Nicky in these times. This team training will be introduced in the WHS workshop.

We have left a link to Nicky's website below (we think she's pretty cool)!

Toowoomba Council Disaster Management

We are involved with Toowoomba Council Disaster Management team and working on ways we can partner with them for environmental outcomes.

Currently in both Southern Downs and Toowoomba Council regions, when they set up an evacuation centre, we would attend to be a drop point for community to bring found wildlife to.

We can triage at their evacuation sites (or places of refuge) and send the animal to the best place, such as carer or hospital/vet.
